Massillon City Schools - NEW LEVY in November

MASSILLON — City School District voters will be asked to pass a new levy in November. During a special session Thursday, Superintendent Rik Goodright told the board that now is the time to seek new revenue from residents.

“My recommendation,” Goodright said, “is to go for new moneys in November of this year.”

Goodright told the board Thursday that he believes an 8.9-mill levy would generate enou...gh money to keep the district stable, barring unforeseen expenditures or cuts in revenue at the state level.

Annually, an 8.9-mill levy would bring in about $3.75 million — more than enough to cover the $3.2 million projected deficit. Goodright also reminded the board that any new revenue collected by this levy will only sustain existing programming. It will not reverse any cuts.

Board members have already been apprised of potential cuts that could be made to save the district money if needed. Those cuts range from moving to state minimum busing levels to cutting preschool programming. Goodright’s hope is that none of those cuts will have to be made.

“When discussing cuts,” Goodright said, “we face a double-edged sword. If we don’t talk about them, we are seen as vague. If we do talk about them, we are seen as threatening. We are not trying to threaten, but we do want to be transparent about our future actions so that residents have enough information to make an informed decision.”

Goodright told the board that if it opts to place the levy on as a five-year emergency levy, voters need to know how often they would asked to renew levies at ballot box.

Massillon has two emergency levies that voters are asked to renew every five years. Adding a third five-year emergency levy means voters could face a renewal levy request in 7 out of the next 10 years beginning in 2013.

“This is about being transparent with the community and letting the community know what its responsibility would look like in the next 10 years,” Goodright said.

2012 Massillon Tiger Football Golf Outing

Today the Massillon Tiger Football Alumni Association held their 22nd Annual golf outing.  What a great day today for a golf outing.  Special thanks to Ron Swartz, Dave Weber and Bob Berquist for organizing this event.  Extra special thanks to Coach Jason Hall for his participation and mediocre golf shots (j/k), but most importantly his support of Massillon Proud and the MP community.

Thanks to the members and advertisers of Massillon Proud for their support in 2012.  Part of your donations supported our football program today by way of our Hole #16 sponsorship (See below).

The Massillon Proud team finished -7 just 5 shots off the lead.  In the future I hope that more MP members will make an appearance at this outing and possibly make it a yearly gathering.  I really enjoyed meeting and chatting with Massillon Proud members today.

Below are some photographs I took today. That's me with Coach Hall in case you ever wanted to put a face behind the name Die Hard Eric.

Lastly, here is a photo of the new Massillon Tiger helmets for the 2013 season. As we had mentioned earlier they will be flat black and the Tigers will also have new uniforms.  Coach Hall told me today that the decal for the helmet is currently being designed by Nike and will be available soon.  Once the decal and uniforms become available I will share that information (hopefully more photos) with the Massillon Proud community.

From the sounds of it Nike has some big plans for Tiger fans this upcoming season and they will soon be launching a website that will make new Nike gear available for purchase.

GO TIGERS!!!!
