Tigers defeat Firestone 27-13

Tonight the Tigers did what they have done most of the season, score early and then put the car on cruise control. The Tiger defeated the Falcons of Firestone 27-13 in front of nearly 7000 a PBTS.

The Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead early following a perfectly thrown pass from Kyle Kempt to Montel Harrison for 53 yards down to the one yard line. Alex Winters would punch in the 1 yard run to give the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish. Winters now has 3 TDs on the ground in the first half of the season. The Tigers would hit two 40+ yard FGs before the end of the first half and would take a 13-0 lead into the locker room.

It was evident early on in this game that the Tigers defense would be too much for the Falcons to handle. The Tigers hit hard and often forcing dropped passes, QB sacks and forcing 4 turnovers. The Tigers defense would eventually give up a score in the 4th quarter as Firestone.

Overall the Tigers played good enough to win tonight. There was not much style to their victory aside from a sound first quarter performance. Most of the yards gained by the Tigers for the game were gained in the first half. The second half of the game the Tigers regressed and spent most of the half going backwards, something they are going to need to fix for the second half of the season if they have hopes of making the playoffs.

Tonight's star of the game would be Andrew David the freshman kicker for the Tigers. David added to his FG total for the year by hitting kicks from 42 and 41 yards. David continues to impress with his leg and he is only a Freshman. We as Tiger fans have been blessed with talent kickers over the past decade and David seems to fit the growing fraternity of young men with exceptional talent in the kicking game.

M-Winters 1 run (David kick)
M-FG David 42
M-FG David 41
M-Kempt 1 run (David kick)
F-Shaw 4 pass from Heimbaugh (Brebant kick)
M-Winters 14 run (David kick)
F-Shaw 3 pass from Heimbaugh (kick failed)

Tigers score 28 in 1st Quarter defeating Woodson, DC

Tigers cruise to victory over Woodson.

A fumbled kickoff to start the game was the only mistake that the Tigers made during the first quarter of the game Friday night.  The Tigers defense would force a three and out and then go on a 35 point unanswered streak of scoring.  28 of those points came in the first quarter alone.

On the Tigers first possession only three players touched the ball, Ben Hampton the center, Kyle Kempt and Alex Winters.  Winters cut and dashed his way through the Warrior defense on the ground and then capped off the drive with an 18 yard TD reception from Kempt.

On the next possession the Tigers stuck with their offensive scheme but changed the personnel.  Ryne Moore would now be the ball carrier and he too cut and dashed his way through the Warrior defense and eventually into the end zone giving the Tigers a quick 14-0 lead.

Garrett Krieger would pick off a pass on the ensuing possession and the Tigers quickly followed the Turnover with points.  This time Kentrelle Taylor found the end zone from 18 yards out.  Tigers lead 21-0 still in the First quarter.

The Tigers would add one more score in the 1st before calling off the dogs.  It appeared that this game was getting out of hand quickly as the Tigers clearly overmatched the Warriors.  The Tigers would avoid making any big mistakes and potential injuries by play extremely conservative football from the second quarter through the end of the game.

Tonight was a night for the underclassman and any player wearing a jersey and a helmet was given their opportunity to shine tonight.  Coach Hall was given an opportunity to evaluate talent in game situation which will help create a greater comfort for the depth of this team.

Again, the defense continues to be the story with this team and tonight they were outstanding.  The first team defense did not yield a single point and for the season to date the first team defense has yielded only 29 points through 4 games (7.1 per game)

The Tigers will take on Akron Firestone this coming Friday night at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.  Look for my blog "Know Your Opponent" later this weekend.

Go Tigers!!
Beat Firestone!!

Tigers defense stifles Maumee 49-14

Look at the final score and you will see that the offense exploded for their highest point total of the season scoring 49 pts en route to a 49-14 victory over the Maumee Panthers Friday night at PBTS. However, what you won't see is how the Massillon Tiger defense for the third straight week played exceptionally well.

The Tigers defense got a crack at defending a new look tonight. Maumee came into PBTS with a two game winning streak and 95 points scored in those two wins. Their spread offense powered by their talented QB who can hurt you with both his legs and his arm, but on this night he would spend much of the night running from Tiger defenders. The Tiger defense excelled at making great open field tackles, forcing turnovers, blocked FGs and playing responsibility football. When this defense works this cohesively they become an extremely good Corp.

The Tigers got on the board early and often in the first half scoring 28 points and leading 28-0 at the half following a Gareon Conley blocked FG to end the half. The Tigers first score came on a 2 yard run by Ryne Moore. Moore continues to impress with his ability to hit the hole quickly and explode into the second line of defense. The Tigers would again strike following a fumbled punt snap that the Tigers would recover. On the first play following the recovery Brody Tonn took the shotgun snap and went nearly untouched into the north end zone and quickly putting the Tigers out front 14-0.

The offensive explosion wouldnt stop there. Tonn would remain in a t QB and this move gave the Tigers a completely different offensive look than what we are accustomed to with Kempt under center. This will benefit the Tigers in the future because teams will now have to prepare for both styles of QB. Great play calling on the part of Thomas Mcd.

Kentrelle Taylor would find pay dirt in the first as he rumbled 27 yards for a TD just before half time. Trelly wouldmcarry the ball 4 times for 34 yards and a TD.

Ryne Moore carried the ball 5 times for 116 yards and 2 TDs (2,72)

Kempt was 11-12 and had 2 TDs. Tonn was 3-3 with a TD run.

Overall the Tigers played well. They bounced back from a tough loss to GO and they handed out their frustrations at Maumees expense. I love the heart of this team and how even the smallest kid on the Tigers can be the biggest hitter. That will and tenacity will carry this team throughout the season.

The Tigers take on DC Woodson next Friday at PBTS.

Go Tigers!

Overview:

Returning letter winners: NA

Returning starters: offense 6, defense 8
Schemes: Spread/3-3 stack

Top players: Seniors Jake Schneider, 5-10, 170, QB/CB; Jon Gratcl, 6-0, 180, LB; Evan Karchner, 5-11, 220, C/LB; Brandon Phenix, 5-11, 170, RB/DB; Jason Blair, 5-11, 220, T/LB; Wes Young, 5-11, 200, OT. Juniors Nick Grzegorzewski, 6-2, 245, G/OT; Al Bryant, 6-1, 220, DE; John Farina, 6-1, 220, DE.

Outlook: Experience on the offensive and defensive fronts will be one of the Panthers' sources of strength. Schneider and Phenix (480 yards rushing, eight TDs) return in the offensive backfield.
Schneider, an All-NLL first teamer, led his team with 1,108 rushing and threw for 2,337 yards and 28 TD passes.
Karchner was a force in the middle of the Panther defense and was named first team all-state. A two-way starter for three years Karchner led Maumee in tackles.
Boles said he feels equally confident about his defense, which also returns experience and talent. The three top tacklers are back: Karchner, Gratcl, and Bryant.
But Maumee graduated all four of its top receivers, including three all-league first teamers. The Panthers also have average size, but its strength and movement are above average, according to Boles. He also must find a new kicker and punter.
"We have a number of receivers competing for those spots," Boles said. "We believe they have the physical ability to be successful. Their progress will also be an important part of our team being successful."

20 Years Ago - Massillon Tigers vs. Akron Garfield Golden Rams

Only one player in Massillon Tiger football history has ever achieved it and chances are you don't recall his name.  His record achieved during week 3 of the 1991 season is undocumented in any record book either in Massillon (Click Here) or by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (Click Here).  Sure, documentation of it exists on micro film at the Massillon Public Library, in print in the newly created Studer Library and on film in the archives of Massillon Football.  However, it is not mentioned in any book ever written about the Massillon Tigers nor does it appear in any published highlight reels of Massillon Tiger football.  In a town so steeped in tradition and full of die hard fans you would think a feat like this would never be missed. One might think, no Tiger fan could possibly be stumped on a such an easy question as "Who has the longest TD run from scrimmage in Massillon Tiger Football History?".

The date was Friday September 14, 1991, Week 3 of the high school football season.  Massillon was handling the Golden Rams of Akron Garfield 48-6 in the early 4th quarter.  Sophomore Dan Seimetz had slipped after fielding the ball on the prior kick off and was downed inside the 1 yard line.  Most if not all of the well known Tigers were out of this game at halftime, no Travis McGuire, Falando Ashchraft, etc.  It was time for the younger guys to get some work.  Many of the 10,752 in attendance were long gone from the game at this point, but for the lucky few that stuck around, they got to witness history.

Chauncey Watson had never taken a snap at the varsity level before, understandably because he was only a sophomore at the time.  His helmet only donning the orange and black stripe dividing his white helmet.  He wore #23, but you won't find that in the game program. His size and his speed was not indicative of your typical sophomore running back.  Watson would punish would be tacklers when given the chance.  Tonight, Watson would be with the varsity because of injuries to Eugene Copeland and Pat McVeen and he would make the most of the opportunity given to him by then Head Coach Lee Owens.

Watson's first varsity carry would be the longest of his short career.  #23 burst through an opened hole by fullback Dan Seimetz "Following great blocks by Terry Holland (seen in photo) and Dan Seimetz, Watson broke (by his count) "five or six" tackles as he roared towards the left sideline and broke into the clear" credit: Steve Doerschuk 1991 Th Independent
Massillon running back Chauncey Watson steps into the Tiger record book with a 99-yard touchdown run
Chauncey Watson would end the night with 7 carries for 134 yards and 1 record breaking 99 yd. TD.  Coincidentally he would also end his career with the same statistical line as he never took another varsity snap for the Tigers following this game.

At the time of his record only 7 players in OHSAA history had carried the load to pay dirt and covered 99 yards while doing so.  Today, 25 players hold a place in the OHSAA Football History books.  It is time that Chauncey Watson gets his name etched into the books.

Note: a copy of the orginal article has been submitted to the OHSAA for review and approval.

Tigers downed by Glenoak 22-21

Tonight, before one of the largest recent non-McKinley game crowds of about 12-13 thousand the Massillon Tigers and Glenoak Golden Eagles played a game that will be talked about for a very long time.  This game ended just like last years contest did, but with Glenoak on the winning end by one point.

Tonights game was filled with a little bit of everything, big plays, half back passes by unlikely suspects, great defense, an onsided kick recovered by the kicking team, ejections, questionable reffereeing, midfield coaches conferences, and one BAD CALL.

The Tigers took the ball first and on the first play of the game connected on a 50 yard strike putting the Tigers into Glenoak territory.  However, as was the case on most drives, the Tigers quickly moved backwards either by penalty or by sack.  Kempt had little time to survey the field as he spent the night under constant pressure.  Massillons first drive would stiffle and Tonn would punt a beauty down inside the 1 yard line.

Glenoak would get on the board first after moving swiftly down the field behind Brionte Dunn (Ohio State Verbal).  The Tigers did a good job of containing what is arguably the best RB in the state of Ohio.  However, Dunn garnered so much respect that Glenoak was able to suck the entire defense towards him on a toss sweep which ended up being a half back pass.  Dunn easily lobbed the TD pass to the endzone for the nights first score.  The kick would be true and Massillon trailed Glenoak 7-0 in the first.

The Tigers would not cave, they came back and answered with a score of their own, Kempt connecting with Montel Harrison for a 28 yard TD.  The Tigers would spend most of the first half in Glenoak territory, but were only able to get 7 points.  A stalled drive in the redzone and a missed FG attempt yielded no points.  Glenoak would tack on a FG to end the half and the Tigers hit the locker room trailing 10-7

Glenoak received the ball to start the half and the Tigers were able to move the ball on the ground behind Ryne Moore and Kentrelle Taylor.  Moore would sprint in to paydirt from 17 yards out giving the Tigers their first lead of the night 14-10.  Less than 2 minutes later the Tigers would strike again on a broken play where Kempt found Tre Hendricks for a 46 yard strike.  Hendricks doing much of the work down field to make the TD possible.  The Tigers lead 21-10 with :50 left in the 3rd.

At this point, Glenoak took over or should i say Dunn took over.  Like a man possessed, Glenoak time after time handed the ball to Dunn who pounded forward for 3 yards, then 5 yards, then 10 yards battering the tired Tiger defense.  Dunn would eventually strike from 12 yards out after a 12 play drive which included him toting the ball 10 times.  Tigers lead shrinks to 21-16 following the failed 2 pt attempt.

The Tigers would get the ball back with 6:00 left in the 4th and an opportunity to wear down some clock, but a quick 3 and out on passes wasted little clock and the ball was punted back to GO.  A bad situation for the Tigers as they were about to feel another Dunn pounding.  This one would be quick an most painful.  Dunn would take the 3 carry of this drive would result in Dunn going 56 yds for TD and a 22-21 lead for the Eagles.

The fourth quarter and final drive of the game would bring about contreversy as Dunn was stripped of the ball with one minute remaining in the game.  The Tigers would recover and the call would then be overturned on an "Inadvertant Whistle".  Scroll down the page to check out the photo of the play and You Be The Judge.  Can't hear the whistle in the photo, but it is my opinion that there is no reason a whistle should be blowing at this stage of the play.  This game was not lost for the Tigers on this play, but an opportunity to WiN may have been taken from them.

This was a great game to watch and great for the kids to participate in.  It had it's contreversy, but it will make these Tigers stronger in the future in my opinon.  Massillon may get the opportunity to see Glenoak again in the playoffs.

The atmosphere tonight was great and in my opinion points to what is great about Stark County football.  Massillon should be playing Glenoak, Perry, North Canton, Jackson, etc. EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!

Go Tigers!!

Beat MAUMEE!!!
