Overview:
There is no secret that Brionte Dunn is what makes Glenoak go.  Last year he carried the ball for over 300 yards, but it was not enough to overcome the late surge by the Tigers.  This year Dunn and the Eagles bring much of the same offense to Tigertown along with a new QB Reid Worstell (transfer from Canton McKinley).  It is the opinion of this writer that the game will be a clock controlled game with the running games of both teams taking a front seat.  Massillon will want to control the clock on the ground keeping the ball out of Glenoak's hands.  The more time Dunn spends on the sidelines the less likely he is to wear down our defense.  Massillon's defense showed great promise last week against Akron Buchtel and RB Darren McGinness.

Massillon rolls to Week 1 victory over Akron Buchtel 31-6

On Thursday the Massillon Tigers took the field amongst speculation of a young and inexperienced team would be taking the field. Gone from the offensive side of the ball were arguably one of the greatest pair of wide receivers this program has seen (Olack and D.Smith). How could the Tigers replace these two key players. The expectations are always high in Tigertown, but this year following the summer scrimmages and 7 on 7's it appeared that the Tigers may be in for a long season.
When the Tigers took the field on Thursday they did so with the intention of wiping the summer slate clean and starting the 2011 season of on the right foot. The right foot would include avenging a tough loss against these same Griffins in 2010.
The Tigers moved the ballon the ground quickly and swiftly though the first quarter on several large runs by Alex Winters. The offensive line did a great job of creating holes for the senior Running back and Winters equally took advantage. Winters would plunge into the end zone from 2 yards out to give the Tigers their first score of the 2011 season. The Tigers would never trail in this game.
The Tigers would answer two more times in the half both on the same connection. Kyle Kempt would connect with Montel Harrison on TD passes of 32 and 57 yards. The 57 yard TD coming with just 4 seconds left in the half.
Ryne Moore would take on the lion share of the carries in the second half. Moore ran very strongly reminiscent of Jake Reiman from a few years ago. Moore would fumble on a drive inside the redone, but quickly bounced backed by taking a carry 19 yards to paucity for the Tigers final score of the night.
Overall, the Tigers had a very productive offensive night and got some much needed work running the ball. The most important statistic for the Tigers on Thursday was they had ZERO penalties.
Defensively the Tigers have been criticized for their inability to tackle over the last few years. The same criticism was bandied about during the summer, but the defense of the 2011 Tigers had an answer in Week 1. Akron Buchtel has a very talented running back #4 who gained over 100 yards on the ground, but was kept from breaking a long run which would have no doubt ended in a touchdown. The Tigers showed increased ability in the tackling department and got 4 quarters of tackling practice for what should be a steady dose of Brionte Dunn next Thursday.
The defense of the Tigers only allowed 87 total yards of offense and posted their first shut out of the season. Buchtels only points coming off of a 50 yard interception return for a touchdown.
One last note from the game, Andrew David, a Freshman kicker took the field formhis first varsity action. After missing his first PAT attempt David rebounded and nailed the next two while adding a 25 yard FG. great Job Andrew!

The Tigers are now 1-0 and will take on the Glenoak Golden Eagles on Thursday at PBTS. Hope to see the stands full for what should be a great contest!

GO TIGERS!!!!! Beat Glenoak!!!!

2011 Massillon Tiger Media Day

The stars were out while the sun was shining.  Clad in all white the 2011 Massillon Tigers took the field for Media day.  Joking and playing around, gathering for silly group photos and the occasional serious photos the 2011 Massillon Tigers were today's center of attention.  The heat only seemed to affect the photographers whom waited patiently for their opportunity to corral players as they went from station to station.  Not even the sweltering heat from the sun could ruin this moment for these young men.  Soon the heat of a different lamp will be shining on them and the seriousness of goals and commitment will set in. The 2011 season is upon us and today we got to meet the next chapter of the Massillon Tiger football program.
